How to Protect Your Home from Invasion

When it comes to protecting your home and everything inside it, you can never take too many precautions. And with employment rates down, crime is likely to go up. Being proactive is essential if you want to ward off would-be invaders. Whether you are looking for some do-it-yourself ways to keep your family safe or want to put a security system in place, we’ve compiled a list of measures you can take to give yourself peace of mind. Keep reading to learn how to protect your home from invasion.

Exterior Security Measures

There are some great ways to protect your home that don’t involve a security system. The first thing you need to keep in mind is that any point of weakness around the exterior of your home presents an opportunity for it to be broken into. Case your home and try to think like a criminal. If you can tell that your dining room window is easily opened, a thief will too. And while the faulty lock on the back door may not seem like a problem, keep in mind that someone could easily scale your fence and test it just to see if it opens. Check out some of our suggestions so that you aren’t inadvertently tempting thieves!

Build/Maintain fencing

If you don’t already have a fence, installing one is a great way to physically deter potential thieves. Most robbers look for easy targets, and there is nothing simple about an imposing fence.

Get to know your neighbors

Having a nosey neighbor doesn’t always have to be a bad thing! By getting to know your neighbors, you not only get to know the neighborhood, but they can also act as a built-in support symptom. If you are going out of town, you can ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out on your home. And who knows, you may even make a few friends along the way.

Keep your lawn free of toys and tools

By leaving items out, you are practically begging thieves to come and steal from you. If you have lots of childrens’ toys, tools, or other items scattered around your front yard, make a point to never leave it unattended. If you have nowhere else to store larger items like a bike, make sure that they are locked down so a criminal can’t easily make off with them.

Secure your car

Automobile break-ins are some of the most common occurrences in neighborhoods. Be sure that you double check that your car is locked.

Keep all doors locked

This may seem like an obvious measure, but making sure that all doors in your home are locked is extremely important. You should also keep windows locked. Otherwise, a criminal could walk in freely and make off with all your valuables or put you and your family at risk for a more violent crime.

Internal Security Measures

It’s easy to feel safe inside your home, but what happens when your external security measures don’t work? And even if they do, it’s always best to have a backup plan for extra protection. Here are some things that you can do inside your home to keep it safe.

Have the locks changed

If you have recently moved to a new place or a previous roommate has moved out, be sure to change your locks. You want to make sure that, even if a previous tenant has returned all keys, there is no chance that they could get in with a copy they had made.

Reinforce windows

This may seem extreme, but reinforcing your windows with safety glass or metal bars will make it impossible for thieves to gain access. There are even some decorative options that don’t sacrifice your home’s style.

Install a security system

Installing a security system is a surefire way to deter criminals, and call 911 should they attempt a break-in. At Mesa Alarms, we have customizable security options that include alarm systems, security cameras, and more.
