Warmer, summer weather generally means carefree days with friends and family, swimming, biking, and other outdoor activities. But with summer vacation in full swing, many homeowners are concerned about making sure that their homes and loved ones inside stay safe. Whether you are concerned about leaving your home while you are away on vacation, or want to make sure that your children are safe while you are away at work, summer safety should always be on your mind. Keep reading to learn more about safety issues at home and summer safety tips to keep your home and children safe.

What is Summer Safety?

Summer safety goes much farther than waiting an hour to swim after you eat. It is a fact that burglaries increase by 11% in the summer months. This is because with the longer daylight hours and school being out, people are far more likely to be away from home, either on vacation or enjoying summer activities. Practicing summer safety tactics can ensure that your home never becomes a target and, if it does, that everyone in your family knows how to appropriately handle the situation.

How Can We Keep Our Kids Safe in Summer?

With school out until the fall (and potentially even longer due to the coronavirus pandemic) It is more likely that children will be left home unattended during this time, and are far less likely to be perceived as a threat to someone looking to break into your home. If you do have children staying home while you are at work, regardless of their age, you need to go over some safety precautions with them to ensure they remain secure inside your home.

Lock Up Behind Them

  • Many burglaries aren’t a premeditated break-in. Accidentally leaving the garage open or forgetting to lock the front door might be too much temptation for a passerby to resist. If your children like to hang out with the neighborhood children, hit up the local pool, or are old enough to leave the house and drive on their own, make sure that they know how important it is for them to lock up behind them and set the alarm system before they leave. If you can manage your garage door and security system from your phone, you can check in on your kids to make sure everything at home is secure while you are away.

Don’t Open the Door for Strangers

  • This may seem like a no-brainer, but children can be very trusting and may open a door for someone that looks non-threatening. More and more, we see cases of criminals impersonating police officers or other officials to get people to open their doors. Make sure your children understand that not all adults mean them well, and coach them accordingly on how they should behave when someone rings the doorbell.

Be Aware of Their Surroundings

  • The most important thing for your children to do is be aware of their surroundings. If they notice that there are any suspicious-looking people in the neighborhood or near your home, they should inform you, a trusted adult, or the authorities immediately. If you have a trusted neighbor that tends to be home while you are away, asking them to check up on your kids or keep a lookout is a great way to ensure that your kids are safe.

How Can We Protect Our Home?

There are some simple steps that you can take to keep your home secure during the summer. Keeping the doors locked and the garage doors closed is a simple one. If you want to take further measures, many security systems offer the option to install a motion detector and security camera. If you are going away on vacation, then you should take care to leave a few lights on while you are gone. Making sure that the lawn stays cut or leaving a car in the driveway while you are gone is another way to deter criminals.
